Decatur Tudor Transformed was a major renovation and addition to an existing Tudor home in City of Decatur.
The existing home was built around 1930, and was designed in the Tudor style. The homeowner wanted the renovation to retain the style characteristics of the original home, while substantially increasing the square footage. The existing brackets and a sample of the profile used in the rafter tails were retained and used in the final design. The 1x wood detailing, common to the Tudor style, was incorporated into the design of the second level. It was extremely important to the homeowner to get the details to accurately reflect the nature of the Tudor style. The exposed rafter tails, curved arches in the gables, and all of the other details were painstakingly worked out during the design process and detailed thoroughly for the contractor to follow easily during construction.
The main level of the home was almost completely reworked, and a new second floor was added. An arched, cased opening was added between the kitchen and living room, to provide a feeling of openness, while still giving each room its own defined space. The trim on the foyer and living room ceiling provide an extra level of sophisticated detail. The vaulted ceilings in the primary bedroom and screened porch add volume and openness to those spaces.
One of the items most painstakingly detailed was the grand stair that connects the main level both to the upper level and to the basement. The analysis of the future stair involved both plans and a 3D model of the stair, to give the homeowner a true understanding of what the space would eventually feel like. The end result is a stair that is wide open to the living room and bathed in natural light.
