Smyrna Mid-Century

The Pinetree Residence project can best be described as a contemporary conversion of a ranch style home into the mid-century modern style.  The client wanted to reimagine the home as something that could have been built in the same time period as their current ranch home, but instead utilizing some of the principles popularized in that era by Frank Lloyd Wright, and further influenced by architects such as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and LeCorbusier.  The project research began with an in depth look into both the historic ranch and the mid-century modern styles of architecture.

The roots of the ranch style can be traced back to the mid 1940’s, when an architect named Cliff May began to reinterpret the notion of living on a California ranch.  He was heavily influenced by the modernist movement and some of the early ideas of architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright.  The ranch style home evolved and was popular between the 1950’s-1970’2, which is when the client’s home had been built.

Some of the fundamental features of the mid-century modern style are flat roofs, clean lines, expansive windows that extended to the roofline, open floor plans, organic materials such as wood, brick, and stone, and a connection to the outdoors.
