Modern Prairie Style Home

The Modern Prairie Style Home can best be described as a mid-century modern version of the prairie style.  This project utilizes some of the principles popularized in that era by Frank Lloyd Wright, and further influenced by architects such as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and LeCorbusier.  The project research began with an in depth look into the historic prairie style, ranch style and the mid-century modern style of architecture.

Some of the fundamental features of the mid-century modern, ranch, and prairie styles are flat or low-sloped roofs, clean horizontal lines, expansive windows that extend to the roofline, open floor plans, organic materials such as wood, brick, and stone, and a connection to the outdoors.  Covered porches create outdoor rooms, extending the livable space, and blurring the lines between inside and outside.  Bold structural elements reach out into the landscape.
